· Wings Rockestra
RM 125- edge Ground Podium (on my birthday)

It has been tradition and practice to me to reward birthday present to my wife on my birthday. And this year comes again and I now 34 years old, the same year with my wife. To be fair for both of us I purchased two tickets of an orchestra concert in Istana Budaya. It is an orchestra gigs but the main dish is the rock outfit, Wings. Seems like both of us enjoyed the band , and the last time we watched the gig together was the last eight years which is before Yasmine is born so this something really exciting to us. And Zareene only enjoy Wings not Search. That was in 2003 at Planet Hollywood, I supposed but as for me, I watched Wings with Search just around the corner, sometimes in December last year at Sunway Lagoon.
The band is backed by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the maestro, Mustafa Fuzer Nawi . It was supposed to be a black tie event but knowing Malaysian mid rockers, they really don’t care the attire. The idea is to combine heavy metal with an epic classical approach which had been materialized somewhere in Berkeley Community Theatre in 1999 for Metallica. The other inspiration was Deep Purple's 1969 Concerto for Group and Orchestra. Purple revived their hybrid musical performance in 1999's Live at the Royal Albert Hall after being notified that Metallica were doing theirs earlier that year. Not well by the name, but reputation is there at this Malaysian version of “rockestra”. Should we proud of it? Oh Mestilah,. Does it sound nicer if they brand this stage as S&W rather than Konsert Wings Opera Hidup Bersama Orkestra Simfoni Kebangsaan? The Opera Hidup tagline may suit to orchestra. Well the name is just the cream, but the music contents does count.
This orchestra show gives another flavor to rock n roll. We are always being fed by the head banging, noise distortion, and worn-torn blue jeans but at this tome rock n roll catered in proper manner where the audience have their own seat, good attire with the strong horn-string sound. No drugs, no screaming, no banging, alcohol and wild act allowed in IB hall. Throw away your rock maniac attitude together with the cigarette’s nicotine and behave like an old man, meanwhile enjoy the music as is you are a decent person.
Zareene and I reached Istana Budaya at 8.00pm and we decided to have our dinner at Laman Santai Budaya and suddenly we met Dicky and Abg Syed , the musician who performed at my office Raya last three years. Sab called me up and asked me to walk up at the front door as many crowd stated to queue up. With the ticket price at RM 125, we sat at the corner of ground circle and may be it can be considered middle class hierarchy at that night. About 10 minutes and the show started. Joe plugged in his Les Paul with Watari but I still haven’t found the symphony and it disappointed me at one point. The show displayed left hand Les Paul driven, Warwick rounded sound and Zildjian drums rapid-tapped against the combination of string, brass, woodwind, and some percussion instruments which I can’t recognize.

The symphony started at middle of the song and thanks for the great violin and the acoustic piano. Hmm sadly attire for Wings at they wore so stained and grungy-looks which I expect the black tie dress code of four of them. The concert visually is the meeting of four beast men with a group discipline musician with clean clothes. But what do you expect from these four beast guys. The show continued with Opera Hidup and the crowd started to cheer and no head banging allowed in this prestigious venue.
The band played most of their rock n roll anthem like Inspirasi Taming sari, Hukum Karma ,Belenggu Irama , Romania , Jerangkung Dalam Almari , Harapan and many more . Those songs were well engineered by Mustafa Fuzer Nawi in symphony way and Joe did his best in arranging the rock n roll power chords riffing. This is the show where the first rock group in Malaysia to collaborate with symphony orchestra. It was a dream of every rock band to perform like this.
I must give credit for slow numbered songs like Di Ambang Wati, sejati, Bernafas Dalam Lumpur and Taman Rashidah Utama where the acoustic touched of piano mixed with violin and cello are well highly arranged. . As for me this is the high time to capture the ingredients of rock n roll with strings detailed rather than three pieces heavy rocks which always being plugged in to my ear almost every day. An exercise for me to calm down and listen bit by bit the notes.

There was a segment of the Awie’s successor (well,he did left the band at one point) where Mus was performing Blues Ular Sawa and Biru Mata Hitamku . Mel aka Ustaz Mail aldo performed his Semalam Yang Hangat and I love his new arrangement of Lena Di Ulit Intan. Jojet , the ex-drummer and Sham , their first former guitarist also were being invited to jam together. Well, Awie is such a great entertainer and he really a joker almost every song-breaks at the night but he missed some notes at the beginning of Rock Roll Lu Punya Suka and Eddie to cover it up. The music bridge almost every songs was filled with cello, horn and violin. The keyboard’s boy of the night was Rozario and he did well for all songs. The show finished at 12. 15pm with their last song, (ohh I can’t remember what song). Everyone seems unsatisfied and the “one more” had clearly shouted. But its end there and Wings also need to sleep as tomorrow evening they will be having their acoustic with super friends at the same venue. This orchestra is really wetting my rock roll thirsted. A stunning idea of hybrid music cultivation.Orgasm and Sangat Puas. Zareene seems more enjoy than me.

As for me, dammit I had to go to Riang Riang and meet Mat Spec & Mat Besi.
