HARD TALK :The Alcatraz of Malaysia

INTRO
Azril: My question is simple... How much money will our esteemed Ministers and politicians make from destroying a century old Heritage site?

What is 5 billion in comparison to a hundred year of history? Some companies can make 5 billion in a year. It took a hundred years for Pudu Jail to become an icon.

RESPOND:
• Ben Azuri Malik :
What heritage? What icon? Dude, it's not like it's the Alcatraz... And it's not something we should be proud of... It's just a place where we place our prisoners, that's all to it...

• Azril:
Isn't that what Alcatraz is in the first place? A place where Americans placed their prisoners?
It's not merely about a single building; it's the entire Malaysian mentality of destroying our history to make way for commercial centres.
Look at what happened to Bukit Bintang Girl's School. A school that produced many many luminaries and women leaders in our country was destroyed to make way for what?

• Ben Azuri Malik :
Alcatraz was famous as the escape proof penitentiary (well almost). Again, I'm asking, what is the significance of our Pudu Prison? Is it a place where our former Prime Minister declared our independence? Do enlighten me.
Agreeing to the demolition of prison doesn't mean I'm forgetting my history and roots Azril. It is up to us to continue on

• Mahen segran
Sure the Pudu Alumni will miss that place?!.. Where will they meet now??!!!!!..

• Saifuddin Ali
The Capitalist rulez... but i do agree with Ben, there's nothing to be proud of ....unless if the govt decided to remove Sultan Abdul Smad building , Railway Station. Pudu Jail is nothing to be appreciated. It just wire mesh plus conventional concrete wall with stupid painting. No architecture value at all..

• Azril:
Oyie, a building that has been standing for nigh 100 years already has historical significance.
A building that was one of the first institutions for incarceration in this country has historical significance as well. Even South Africa preserved an incarceration island facility that housed many of its resistance off the Coast of Cape Town. That's South Africa and here we are, going around and happily tearing our memories and our heritage apart....
As for remembering our history, bro... Hearing about something and seeing it with your own two eyes are two extremely different experience.

If I just "heard stories" about the Tower of London instead of being able to walk through its dungeons and such, seeing the torture implementations, I would not be able to appreciate its significance as much.
As for Ministers making money off other projects, that's still fucked up because in the end it's still the rakyat's money.

You know my family, we're BN people through and through but dear Lord, at least there should be some limit to how low they wanna stoop.

• Azril:
Bng Chak, as for Capitalist rulez, the funny part about that, most of the developed capitalist countries are extremely keen about preserving their old buildings. Lets look at Italy for instance and how keen they are on preserving Venice even though that man made island is sinking and its costing them a bomb. As for its comparison to Alcatraz because its nigh inescapable, Pudu is still one of the first prisons our nation has seen.

• Saifuddin Ali

Yaa...but if we still preserve the jail, it won’t be a tourist hotspot. We cannot compare Pudu Jail with Arc de Trumph. Both are heritage structures but do you think tourist from Paris would come here just to see Pudu Jail...no right? Same case with Perigi Hang Tuah. Outsider tourist won’t visit there except Rombongan Cik Kiah n Tadika Kemas. Heritage is not only about the time frame.

OUTRO:
Heritage is not only about the time frame
. We must take into account the art, architecture and the value factor in order to conserv our heritage structures. Yes, capitalist sucks but in this case , Pudu Jail is nothing much to be appreciated. LET the alumni meet in the mosque and starts praying.
